WHAT IS RYUSEIKEN BATTO-DO?

Batto-do transLates as the “way of the drawn sword.” It is a style that unites the three areas of Japanese sword study; kata (forms), shizan (applications), and tameshigiri (test cutting). It was developed centuries ago in Japan and has in recent times become an increasingly popular form of sword study due to its’ comprehensive approach to studying the sword. Ryuseiken is a style of Batto-do (it translates as “Dragon Star Sword”) that was formulated in Sakai City, Japan by Mitsuhiro Saruta, Soke (founder). It is now taught in numerous countries worldwide, and has a growing membership in the U.S.

 

WHAT DO I NEED TO START?

You can start cLass with just some comfortable workout clothes and a bokuto or bokken (wooden sword). Later, a uniform will be needed for promotions. Other equipment such as goshinken (padded sparring swords), suburito (heavy practice swords), or even katana (swords) can be purchased as needed.

 

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

On an introductory level, cLasses will focus on the basic stances, movements and cuts, as well as terminology, anatomy and care of the sword, and history relating to the Japanese Sword. Students who wish to pursue the art further wilt be introduced to advanced drawing techniques, combat sparring and various methods of cutting on straw targets. All classes will emphasize the dojo rides and etiquette, as well as the esoteric principles of the martial arts, so that students can come away with and even deeper understanding of the art that they are studying.

 

WHERE CAN I LEARN?

Enrollment for classes is ongoing and students are welcome to Join at any time during the month. Anyone 14 years of age or older may participate. Two locations available:
